On Longing: a dioramic residency

In March and April I’m connected to Residency Unlimited in Brooklyn, New York. The main focus is to investigate the legendary diorama’s at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH).

As a guideline, I’m using ‘On Longing: Narratives of the Miniature, the Gigantic, the Souvenir, the Collection’ by Susan Steward (Duke University Press, Durham and London, 1993).

This book was recommended to me by art historian Tineke Reijnders while working on my master paper for the Sandberg Institute in 2000-2001. She provided me with excerpts on The Souvenir, as part of the fictional letters I wrote to her, from a future suffering from climatic complications.

The book seems to be relevant to my research in relation to ‘solastalgia’: homesick when you’re at home.
